Why the Old SEO Playbook Is Failing in the Era of AI Overviews.
Google's AI Overviews Just Took Over Search— Is Your Business Still Visible? New Similarweb data shows AI-generated summaries now dominate US search, and being “cited” no longer means being clicked.
43% of Searches: Now show an AI Overview, up from 15% a year ago
279M Visits: To Google's AI Mode in May 2026, up from 126M in June 2025
6.8% Citation Rate: Of ChatGPT responses with web citations, up from 1.3%
1: AI Overviews Are Now Everywhere in Search:
AI-generated summaries have nearly tripled their reach in a single year. According to Similarweb's 2026 Generative AI Landscape report, Google's AI Overviews appeared in 43% of measured US searches, up from just 15% a year earlier.
These summaries sit directly inside conventional search results, while a separate, more conversational interface called AI Mode handles longer questions and follow-up prompts — and users can move between the two without losing the context of their original search.
The growth in AI Mode usage tells a similar story: Similarweb estimated visits climbed from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026. Google has separately said AI Mode passed one billion monthly users, though that figure measures users rather than visits and isn't directly comparable to Similarweb's estimate.
2: Inside AI Mode's Query Fan-Out:
Search behavior itself is changing shape. Google says AI Mode relies on a technique called query fan-out, breaking a single question into related subtopics and running multiple searches behind the scenes before assembling a response with supporting links. Similarweb's data backs up a related shift: the average length of Google searches increased 5.4% after AI Mode launched, as users started typing longer, more natural-language prompts instead of short keyword strings.
“People are now adopting a new, more natural way to search and discover.”
—Ethan Smith, CEO of Graphite, in Similarweb's 2026 Generative AI Landscape report
That shift matters beyond Google. Similarweb found that generative AI websites overall — including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — drew an average of 9.5 billion monthly visits between June 2025 and May 2026, up 70% year over year, with monthly unique visitors up 57% to 655 million. Notably, most ChatGPT users still use Google too; people are layering multiple AI and search tools rather than replacing one with another.
3: The Citation Gap: Cited ≠ Visited:
Getting cited by an AI answer doesn't mean getting a visit. The share of ChatGPT responses containing web citations jumped more than fivefold, from about 1.3% in June 2025 to 6.8% in May 2026 on US desktop activity — with higher citation rates in categories like travel, retail, and sports, where prices and availability change often. But Similarweb found a real gap between which pages get cited and which pages get clicked.
About 65% of URLs cited by ChatGPT were deep pages — specific articles or product pages two or three folders below the main domain, with folder-depth two alone accounting for 41.7% of citations. Referral traffic told a different story: 58.8% of AI referral clicks landed on homepages, not the detailed pages doing the work of answering the question. In short, deep content earns the citation; the homepage gets the visit.

4: Publishers Fight Back with Pay Per Crawl:
Not everyone is content to let AI crawlers browse for free. Google has responded to publisher concerns about lost referral traffic by adding direct links, article suggestions, website previews, and more prominent source references within AI Overviews and AI Mode — though it hasn't published data on how those changes affected click-through rates.
ChatGPT made its own move on May 7, giving brand links more prominence in responses; Similarweb recorded a 157.7% week-over-week jump in ChatGPT referral traffic afterward, with homepage referrals up 354.7% and the homepage share of referral visits jumping from roughly 26–32% to around 60%.
Meanwhile, Cloudflare is testing a Pay per Crawl service that lets website operators permit, charge, or block individual AI crawlers, returning an HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response when paid access applies and distributing collected fees back to site owners. It's an early sign that the relationship between publishers and AI platforms is becoming a negotiated one, not a free-for-all.
5: What This Means for Enterprise SEO & AI Visibility:
For any business that depends on search traffic, the shift is structural, not cosmetic. Nearly half of US searches now resolve without a click, citation rates are climbing fast, and the pages earning citations often aren't the pages earning visits. Standing still on last year's SEO strategy means quietly losing visibility inside a growing share of searches.
● Deep, specific content — not just homepages — is what AI systems pull into their answers.

Being Cited Isn't Enough — You Need a Strategy Built for AI Search:
If nearly half of US searches now resolve inside an AI Overview, and most AI citations still don't translate into a visit, then the old SEO playbook is only doing half the job. Businesses need workflows that monitor how they're being surfaced across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and every other answer engine — and that adapt content and structure in response, not months later.
That's exactly the kind of ongoing, automated monitoring and optimization Agent+,
